In

about two weeks ago, a high ranking Nigeria naval officer’s bodyguards assaulted a young lady for not moving her car from the road on time. The said Naval officer was said to be inside his car while this assault was carried out.
A lot has been said by the media, bloggers and various human right organizations. Many website links narrating the assault had been posted on the internet. Somehow I am concerned that the  relevant agencies nor the said high ranking officer had not deemed it fit to say anything.

This, to me speaks volumes about the ability of our society’s public figures and relevant authority in crisis management. Let us assume that it was not an intentional act, what we have at hand now is a crisis that needs to be managed. Speaking out and showing remorse is a necessity particularly when the victim has been quoted as saying that all she wanted is am apology. The concerned party ability to show a sign of remorse could have helped in this matter. The Naval authority actually made the matter worse by saying that the young defenseless lady provoked heavily armed guards.

The image of our nation is at stake, the image of the Nigerian Navy is at stake and finally the image of the said Rear Admiral left much to be desired. There are things to do in time of crisis and nothing seemed to be coming forth from the above mentioned quarters.

The government of Nigeria should have taken responsibility and speak out, the naval authority should have spoken and the said Admiral should have spoken in an environment where the rules of law prevail. I know we have laws in Nigeria and I am convinced this is an aberration. The silence of all the parties mentioned above has led to the spread of rumour mills and this portend a very negative image for our great country.
Damage control is key and we must now embrace all the crisis communication weapons so we do not do more harm to our national image. It is never too late to apologize, so the need act now. The whole world is watching. This is not an animal kingdom. The sanctity of human right and corporate national image must be protected.

N.B the picture here is that of the chief naval officer of the nation.
