Optimism: a weapon in personal branding

Optimism is a mental fixation on how one chooses to respond to life. . Webster’s Dictionary defines optimism as “an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events, or to anticipate the best possible outcome.”
In an article by Nuta, she defines Optimism as the ability to see the positive side of things rather than the negative. Optimistic thinkers are usually positive people because they approach life with the expectation that a happy outcome is both desirable and possible. True optimism doesn’t mean being unaware of problems; it means actively looking for the positive factors in a situation.
Some feel that it is living a vague life when living with optimism. Seeing the positive side of complicated situation gives optimists the nerve and ability to carry on and try again. They can gain knowledge from their mistakes and are able to relate that knowledge at a later stage. Pessimists, on the other hand, tend either to avoid similar situations in the future, or to repeat the same fatalistic errors.
Our ability to choose our mental outlooks and actions is actually the greatest life-success power we humans have. Every moment we have a choice to either let things wear us or not.
Personal brands with negative outlook can not draw the right audience. Everyone has issues they are dealing with and no one wants additional luggage. In her book “The Secret” Rhonda Byrne suggested five attributes that go with optimism:
- Smile at EVERYONE – it’s contagious, really
- Practice saying “well, that’s not too bad…” when people want to rehash the terrible news, the latest symptoms of so-and-so’s illness, etc. Obviously, don’t say this when someone has died or something really horrible has just occurred.
- After employing point number 2, counter every piece of negativity with something positive – “wow, China is over populated, but have you heard how reintroducing gray wolves has really balanced the ecosystem back out in North America?”
- If you find it hard to think positively really do some introspection - maybe with some self-help books or a counsellor. Try to understand if your mindset is really based in your fears and anxieties or if it’s a product of your environment – is negativity the way your family automatically reacted to anything?
- Trite but true – COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS! It’s hard to hold on to a negative outlook if you consciously dwell on the good things in your life.
