When you are asked what the difference between a journey and destination is, many have issues differentiating the two. We have heard the accolade ‘success is a journey not a destination’. Yea, that is true in a way. But how can one engage in a journey when destination is not known. Success means several things to different people. To some it is money; to others it is fame; while others it is having a happy family. The difference between the word success and personal branding is that audience opinion is a vital thing. Your personal brand is not successful until your target audience says so. It is not only about you, it affects those who use your offerings. It affects your inner as well as external community. Though, strategic management of your personal brand can lead to having you and your audience appreciating your brand and to call it successful.
Let us examine what personal branding entails. These are not in no mean exhaustive.
1. Personal Branding covers a lot of territory: Personal branding is like a tree with many branches. It covers image management, impression management, communication, positioning, and strategy development. As we know, if the branches are off, the survival and beauty of the tree depends only on the root. Its functionality is reduced. But one needs to first understand what the tree is.
2. Message; the message of the personal brand is important. This is the value proposition which has to be crafted with greater understanding of what the personal brand is with a promise of value that the audience will enjoy. Do not damage your personal brand with ambiguous message that has no tail or head.
3. Culture: the culture that is associated with a personal brand or any other brand for that matter is important. Be associated with a great culture or tradition.
4. Meaning: this has to do with experience, perception and how emotional attached are your audience to the brand. All these branches among others are vital to successful development of a brand. Tomorrow is Christmas day. Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year in advance.
