Everyone is a partial participant today in digital activities. It is either you are being talked about or you are part of the conversation. It is becoming a hard thing to remain neutral. Unfortunately many who are active are creating more damage for their brands while others are just getting by. The goal should not be to get by, but to achieve the best that is available.
Many in the past had asked us what are the major steps they can take that can help them achieve better result in their various online activities. They want something which can be useful to a casual user as well as a focused and strategic user. While we do not claim to know everything that can help, the following issues should be given priority.
Be yourself: while there are several people and brands with several outlook, trying to be like Jones and john will hurt you more. As we know our persona are different. Many are in between been lousy and reserved. If you understand your personal character, play along your strength and not along another person/brand’s strength. You may think or feel they are exciting and fun. They may also silently wish they can be like you. So to play here, first understand who you are.
Tell your own story: no one wants to be with people who have no story to tell. People like you because they feel you have certain qualities that appeal to them. A continuous and uninteresting story about others may drag them away from you to someone they feel is real, natural without a lot of unappealing drama.
Be compelling: be compelling means you must be convincing, persuasive and forceful. It is a pointer to the fact that you can sustain a conversation and fun to be with. You must be able to do this without appearing to be faking it or being unusually domineering.
Listen, Listen and listen: whatever you do online, you must be a good listener. Listening is not an art we learn in our everyday lives. We are programmed to be good speakers, make good presentation but we often overlook a greater part of effective communication which is listening. Success cannot be guaranteed here if you do not take time to listen to community as well as monitor what is going on around you.
Place value on others: a fall out of the above is to respect your community members as well as other online users. Respect is earned and not given. Do not try to show off you knowledge at everyone you meet online. Even if you have facts, learn to respect others as that will earn you more respect and make acceptable.
Think collaboration and not solo run: The digital universe is too large for an individual or brand to aspire to own completely. Collaboration is the word in today’s world. Take time to build relationships with others especially industry influencers who can help you amplify your voice. Anything short of this will make your activities, actions insignificant.
