Any organization with an eye on success must not only have a communication team, but equip them well. There is no serious organization today which will not consider having a digital communication unit. Where this belongs may be a matter of nomenclature but we envisage it should belong to communication unit and not under IT. At worst, the unit can be within the umbrella of marketing communication team.

That said, digital team can be a disaster or a blessing. This will depends on the quality and composition of the team in itself. Organization through its Human resources must therefore put a lot of efforts in recruiting the right, highly effective force that can deliver.  Today we will examine some of these qualities and if there is further need for help, we are open to further assistance.

Customer service skill: this plateau is a domain for people with people management and relationship ability. We do not deal with robots. Hence it is essential to have people with good customer relationship and management skills.

Communication/copywriting skills: One essential skill here is good communication skill. Team member must hone their skills or be willing to learn. They do not need be a professor of the language but it is essential to have a craving to improve on what they have for now.

They must have eye for solution: The essence of online media is to provide a unique solution. Hence team member has to focus on solution and not the problems.

Focus on corporate over personal gains: any digital team member that focuses on personal gain, visibility over corporate goal achievement will be a great liability to the team. So check their ability and endurance in this area.

Basic knowledge of how web works: Web 2.0 comes with its own opportunities and challenges. Hence team member needs some basic knowledge on how the web works.

Knowledge of online multi- platform demands/rules: each online media tool has its own ‘dos and don’ts’. Digital media person must therefore be conversant with these ever changing demands.

Great knowledge of the brand and its online audience: Every member of your digital team needs to know your brand very well. This knowledge must include your objectives, solution you provide and your brand’s uniqueness as well as how to protect these. Team member will do well if they also have a good knowledge of your corporate target audience.

Basic knowledge of social media laws: There are acceptable social media laws for its practice, use. Member should know social media laws that guide global activities as well as local demand. They need not to be cyber law experts though.

Strong ability in conversation facilitation: The platform is for conversation building and not for broadcast or monologue. So member should know how to facilitate conversation at different levels.

Developed story and content management skill: In addition to the above, storytelling skill will work magic. No matter how technical your industry is viewed, ability to craft a story will make the conversation less cumbersome and uninteresting to ordinary people out there.

Passion to meet the demand: This place is not for people who want 8-5 jobs. The demand is more especially when there is crisis. Passion will drive individual to make necessary sacrifices.

Graphics: Where there is fund, a digital team should have a team member who has sound graphic design skills. In the absence of this, team member must develop basic knowledge in this.
