The essence of social platform use is not all about sales. It is about conversation and strong allied building. Those who aim to dominate, show off as well as silence others may have to look elsewhere. Building relationships as we know is not a day’s job. It requires time, temper management as you may not build solid relationships if you want everyone to be like you or take instruction from you.
If done properly, no matter your purpose of using social platforms, it is very obvious you stand better chances of success. You can make headway and achieve success with your efforts on social platform than when you run away from it. It is amazing in this age and time to hear people say it is better to stay away from social media than to be involved. They nurse the fear of being used, attacked or some other associated evils with its use. My question is why do such people sleep, board Aircrafts and speed boats when there is a probability of not reaching their destination.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and we have no reason to blame any. Our concern in this piece is all about people, brands who have chosen to flow with the trend by embracing these new tools as part of their communication strategy. Using social platforms without social engagement can be frustrating. It is like going on a continuous lone road without a bird in sight not to talk of human being who can make the journey fun and exciting. For some active players on social media, this seems to be their experience. Let me firsts say, it is expedient you do not expect overnight success. Any crowd you gather hastily may destroy you. People who follow you must know you: you values, principles as well as life orientation. This does not come cheap. It is a product of interaction, conversation, dialogue, re-alignment, adjustment as well as give and take.
For those who care, we just launched another platform for discussion on Africa policy, politics and governance, it will be foolishness for us to expect the number of community readers we have here on that same platform now. We know it will take time but we are ready to wait, work hard and stick to our aim. I am reading a Ebook by Salesforce on this issue and here are some of the way you can use to achieve your goal in social media engagement.
Know your onions: Do not play in a field you do not have great passion. The sea of social media can submerge you within weeks. So play towards your own strength. Join conversation in areas you know you can make better impacts. Do not try to impress anyone by pushing out data that are not verified. You can never gain friends by bragging about stuff you know nothing about.
Build trust: Trust is a social capital. No matter how hot the news is, never break or share it until you are so sure it is the truth based on your knowledge. The urge to be the first has permanently ruined many brands. It may take years to repair damage done.
Hone your storytelling ability: We live in the age of stories. People love story. Story helps build better understanding. What you say and the way you say it couple with a level of creativity can make the change you desire a reality within short time.
Manage your temper/anger: This is a platform for many fun seekers as well as mischief makers. Some will be deliberate in hurting you. Some may not have right decorum and life orientation. Some underdogs do seek for attention by trying to attack known faces. It is in your own interest to note you are standing before close to five billion people. The other side of it is that a quick manifestation of anger online will outlive you as Google never forget.
Play and relate well with influencers: you can never do it alone. We all need people, especially good people to arrive at our destinations. All the people online cannot be following you alone. You can only share a portion of them. Relating with good online influencers in your field and possibly outside your field will give you necessary push to reach millions out there. Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding are so named because it requires credible crowd to achieve.
Have a focus and show you are human: there is enough distraction out there. Know why you are there. Do not project yourself as Mr. Perfect. People will see your own weakness within seconds. But let them know you are human who is prone to error.
Keep learning: new tools and knowledge keep coming out. New records are broken everyday. Be open to changes around you. Never be set like concrete. It does no one no good. A community member may have the information you need, never be too proud to learn from anyone. With these and many others, you will be on your way to social media engagement success.
