benefits of blogging, challenges of blogging, how to make your blog stands out

How time flies. Few days ahead it will a decade now that I started out my blogging experience. In between, I have had moments: sometimes not knowing what to write, sometimes excited that I am helping someone out there with the little knowledge one has and  sometimes I had remained silent as if my hand could not touch the tablet’s button.

All the same it has been fun. I had met new people both physically and virtually who had complimented our effort. We have also been able to build new relationships and business deals. We have had the privilege of helping both undergraduate or graduate students achieved a better grades through consistent sharing and helping out with relevant materials. At least for those who had reached out for such assistance. We must confess we wish one would have wanted or enjoyed more financial benefits.

But everything is not about Dollar and Pound sterling’s. But the fact remains blogging had given me opportunities I would never had had in life. In few instances it has opened a new door for me and eventually we consider the little benefits are enough to compensate for the time when one has to stay up and read, monitor events in our industry. We know it takes courage to stay with something for a decade. We must admit though the consistency of our blog posts here had reduced and we hope to go back to at least a blog post per day as the custom was.

The essence of today’s post is not for reminiscence.  Recently someone asked us what are the five major recommendations we can give on what makes a blog post stands out. After a long thinking and looking back,  we offer the followings. As we all know, thousands of blog posts are posted online daily. The joy of a blogger or online writer is to see that the time he took to cook a blog post is worth the while through the traffic it can draw, the values he had given which is well appreciated through comments, interactions, and sharing by third party. So here are what we can offer for now.

1.Personal voice: There is nothing entirely new in this world. If there is, they may be few or seen in such way because of the innovation and creativity added to them by an individual. To be relevant, you need a voice of your own. That is why people who copy and paste do not command much attention. Someone has said ‘learn to copy right’. Even if it is the same industry news you are sharing be sure that your own voice is clearly distinguished in the write up.

2.Authority: Your personal voice must also reflect your authority. Authority comes from fact, integrity and a deliberate act of pushing out what you know is the truth and not just unsubstantiated gossip. You can also leverage on the authorities of other industry giants and influencers. Add a voice, quote someone in your blog post.  It is not a sign of weakling to quote someone. One day you will also become a reference point. Plagiarism without right acknowledgement will eventually hurts your brand and platform.

3.Images: people who overlook Images in their blog posts are doing themselves a lot of disservice without knowing. There are varied categories of readers and learners out there.  Majority  are visual learners. Images help them understand your messages better than text even though text is important. There is argument today also which favours personalised images which speak volume than many you will get on known free images, picture websites. Bloggers need to know how to take pictures that appeal to them on their everyday life. The images you ignore today may be the thing that will help you get a sell out post tomorrow.  So invest in a good smartphone or camera that can help you capture pictures on the go.

4.Valuable content: As much as the above are essential, your content must add value to your target audience.  You really did not want to satisfy every online users. But let the target get value for the time they will be using on your platform.

5.Keep it short and simple: attention is a big issue today. Not many people are very tolerant of a platform which wastes their time with one thousand words when the idea can be better communicated in 500 words. We do know some issues especially the technical ones must be detailed enough but in most cases, many things can be shared in less than 500/600 words.

6.Remeber what Google says now: Google is an almighty arbitrator here. It helps in exposing your content through its search capacity. So if you violate its rules you will suffer untold hardship. It is expedient you keep an eye on its rules. The new rule is that your content has to be mobile friendly. So design of your platforms must immediately give regard to this if you still want to be relevant.

7.Constantly appreciates those who make it happen : in the course of your blogging journey, you will notice few who are extremely loyal to you through consistent sharing, reposting, marketing etc. Take note of such individuals. Become their friends, send  them emails find out how they are doing and what is happening in their lives. You may help them by doing a blog post around their business etc by all means care and show enough concern which can encourage them to do more.

8.Relate with influencers: creating valuable content is just the beginning, marketing it is work. Build relationships with influencers and tag them when sharing on micro blogging and other sharing points. It helps your exposure.

9. Keep improving on the use of language, style: You do not need to be a Professor of English to start writing. But you must keep learning how to ut forward your best shot. Learn to write well. Some readers will not come near your platform if you keep ‘destroying’ the medium of communication. I am very grateful for the choice of pursuing blogging. I am not a saying I have mastered the use of English without error but I am sure I had improved from what I used to be when I started out.10: Always remember the source of your commitment: It is not everyday you wake up that you will feel like writing. As individual, you have issues. Except if your blogging is the main source of your income, sometimes you do not want to. But remember the joy you derived when that blog gave you opportunity to share knowledge, to be an added value to someone out there or a mail you received from other continents which praises your efforts. Keep your source of inspiration afresh and you will want to continue.
