Wow, it is 2018! Whether you are a media or personal brand striving to be the market leader or you are at the top of the game, 2018 has come with its own uniqueness. You have not lived this year before. It is a clean slate which offers everyone opportunity a start afresh. Our level of success irrespective, there are basic stuffs we must know and apply if things must go the way we wish. Never forget if wishes were horse, beggars will ride. For your wishes and goals to come to pass there is a work to do. It is the price brand must pay that distinguishes the successful and the failure.

As we start a new year, it is our pleasure to share ?with our community lessons we have learned from our own personal mistakes. Even if your brand do not fall into this category, there may be something you can learn. ?Someone says the list below is a common sense stuff. Common sense is not common hence we need to re emphasise.

1. They weigh the value in every opportunity: each new year comes with its own opportunity and downside. Some opportunities look perfect with a colour of ‘must not miss’. Because they appear juicy we often jump at them without due diligence. We do not look through the conditionality ?which may demand more than we bargain for. People say jump before you look. That may be good while you are still unknown or trying to make a name. When you become a market leader you need a level of caution. This is no way mean you must waste precious time in decision making deceiving yourself.

2.Detail. Detail. Detail: ?what is worth doing is worth doing well. When we started out here, I hardly looked through the write – ups. ?I was usually excited I have something to say, value to add without going through the piece many times before publishing. Today I am learning to do a better job after I had paid heavy price of not being thorough in my writings. Many will not forgive your oversight in this area no matter how great you are. Names of people are important, get their spellings right. ?People want personal touch service not ‘mass service’

3. Go the extra mile, beat the odds: in addition to the above, be willing to go the extra mile. Be willing to pay your dues. It is now 12 years that I started online content publishing. Yes I have been lazy in some of the years but I am glad I am still here. Pay the price, go the extra miles. That is the mark of success. One caveat,be sure you are on the right track and you are doing what you love.

4. Do not be too hard on yourself: along the line, I have started some other online publishing ideas, some had failed. That is just an event, it does not mean I am a failure. Reason for their failure may be ?I did not sit down to calculate the cost of adding more responsibility to the one I have. Despite their failure ?some of the projects had opened certain opportunities I could not have gotten without starting them. Though they no longer exist today. When the doors are closed, there is something you will learn.

5. Be helpful. Help and add ?value: ?One unique quality of successful brands is they offer helping hands in some ways to their community and environment. There is a good feeling you get when you can go to sleep remembering your time, resources, skills have been used to reduce human suffering. Even when it is just to fulfil the law, great brands are heavily involved in one corporate social responsibility or the other. You need to go beyond fulfilling the law. Make it a priority. ?Use your skills to help shape someone’s business or ideas.

6. Annex technology: no matter what you do, technology is here to stay. Find a better and economical way of using technology to enhance your service delivery and efficiency. ?Do not kill yourself trying to do everything manually or through physical contact.

7. Work on your network: Your network will become increasingly important than you think. Forget the idea of being self made. Yes there are things you must do personally. But a good and quality network can help you reach higher altitude faster than you think. Create, nurture and strengthen relevant network and prune some. The higher we grow the more we discover we do not need everyone nor should be involved in popularity contest.

8. Never wait until everything is perfect: Till date, I am not the best of writer I want to be. I am still not happy with my writing style. When I read other piece writing by pro I am sometimes ashamed. But if I had waited till I am in the current level, I would not have started at all. Today I am a better writer than I used to be. One of my goal this year is to attend courses and soak in a lot of materials on copyrighting and advanced storytelling. What is yours?
