But not every road gets you to the place you are going. In the new communication landscape we find ourselves, we know a solo run has become bygone game. Thinking community is the fastest way to growth. We must quickly add a caveat to this: only quality community does more good. This is because your community spirit provides better support than you can ever imagine.

Before we continue, it is good to have an idea of what online community means. I like an online writer definition which states ‘A community is an online hub where people with shared interests can communicate, get support, build relationships and be recognized using social applications’. There is therefore no outstanding success online until we begin to think in term of the whole community instead of ‘me’ too syndrome. The goodwill of the community will rob of on everyone and not only the brand. Thinking about community will require the followings.

Share your values: People connect with what appeals to their orientation, values and yawning. To build a community, there is need for you to understand what your major values are. There are several ways we can look at this but whatever you are doing, place priority on honesty, integrity and human dignity. These values usually determine what you and your brand can do and cannot do online. Without this, your social media activities become a faulty electronic item, it does more damage than good.

Business and individual prosperity: when you also think in term of community, your brand will enjoy business prosperity and the prosperity of the whole community. Note that what prosperity means for you may not mean exactly the same for every community member. For some, a quality association, sharing, being part of something larger than them count; while breaking even and achieving corporate goal may be yours.

Policy: to be successful online, you need policy which may be your guiding procedure. Community is great but you need to consider everyone’s emotion. Some of the community members may be unruly, uncultured. It is consideration for others that should make you establish a community rule. This should guide everyone involvement and action. Success in social media activities is not guaranteed without this.

Expectation: set expectation for all. What you want and what you expect from every community member. Expectations should come with either reward or a form of a gift. That is if you can. There is no successful action without stated expectation. You want the community to share with their friends online, tell them about you?. There should be no need for pretence. When people do not know how to help you, they may not be able to do so. Ask for help and reward them also.

Community ‘welfarism’: make everyone feels they are part of something great and continuously seek the good of everyone in the community. If this becomes a daunting task, make sure a great chunk of the community enjoys the benefit of being part of the community.

Share the glory: there is no way your social media activities will be successful if you always own the glory. Let every member of the community feel needed. Even if all they do is to like the content and share with their friends without dropping any comment. Be apt to let them know.
