The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 came with many disruptions. Media and employment landscape had been badly shaken. These changes include changes in job nomenclatures. Many jobs had been lost while there has been changes to real definition of what work environment means. Today ‘remote or work from home’ has become part of the lexicon.

The chances of a continued rise in remote work is a reality we must embrace. This is because the pandemic seems to be defiant as some of the global health solutions are not matching up. Different variants of the COVID-19 viruses are rearing their heads.

Finding or landing new or lucrative media jobs may not be impossible irrespective of corporate downsizing syndrome and trends.  Remote work has become one of the options.  How can media job applicants secure lucrative remote jobs in this trying time?  Trying to find a good answer to this question made the writer to go in search of an appropriate answer. I found this article which helps simplify the process. So some of the thoughts shared here are gleaned from the article.

Getting a remote job can be difficult or easy depending on the efficient showcasing of vital skills such an environment needs by an individual.  Let us discuss some of these skills.

Self-motivation: working at home requires a lot of self-motivation. Unlike working in a regular office where we have many other highly motivated individuals around who can supply the tonic needed. Working remotely is a different ball game, employees are mostly alone within their own corner.

Having an indomitable inner energy to move ahead despite the daunting deadlines and deliverables within allotted time is important. Yes, there may be online help made available by the company through essential communications apparatus like email, telephone, text messages etc but the majority of the work will be done while the employee is possibly alone  in the house.

Flexibility and Malleability: remote work will demand huge ability to accommodate or adapt to other unplanned challenges. For those who have small kids at home, some of these kids will require occasional attention. This may affect the flow of work. This ‘distraction’, especially for some of the duties that require full attention can be challenging. Ability to master the situation without being disturbed will be a plus.

Communications, communications and communications: We do know media landscape is heavily dependent on communications. Communication skill needs new level of mastery as our world continues to change. A lot of modifications are been included. Diplomacy, political correctness and choice of words for different environments are on the increase. Gender and choice of words associated with it is going through ‘modernization’.

Physical and virtual communication settings may come with some difference. Physical communications can be helped or hampered by paralinguistic features. Tone can also affect virtual communications. So the more an individual continue to search and master advanced skills in the area of communication the better the chances of landing a lucrative remote work.

Cooperation and collaboration: the implications of some or all of the above points make this factor essential. There will be time individual skills or energy may not be able to carry them too far. Ability to build collaboration and cooperation through strategic strong alliances among colleagues, friends or associates will deliver the magic necessary for greater exploit.

Working and delivering real value in any remote work will require tested and proven cooperation and collaborations skills. Build or enhance this skill now before it is too late.

Time management and organization: remote workplaces constantly witness change. Anyone who will become key players here will have to demonstrate his/her mastery in efficient time management. Strong ability in organizing and planning duties in a productive and creative way will put an individual above the packs. It has also be affirmed ‘organisational skills in a remote role will require being efficient, effective and productive’.  Can you do these with ease or your need to learn how?

Critically assess yourself now and position. Your chances are still high.
